Cerberon Core Re-Booted

Our apologies for the downtime here at chmodoplusr.com. Our former hosting company decided to arbitrarily terminate our hosting contract under the pretext that this website was monopolozing the shared server CPU.

Naturally, given the small size and low complexity of the website, such a problem could only have arisen either out of an attack on or a fault in the PostNuke or PNphpBB2 systems. The former web serving company has, to my great disgust, declined to provide logs of the incident, so I'm left in the dark as to what exactly went wrong.

Regardless, hosting companies of their calibre are a dime a dozen, and as you can see, the new one is now functioning just fine. No data whatsoever has been lost.

I have made some configuration changes to try to enhance the anti-flood protection and I will be monitoring the website to ensure that chmodoplusr.com does not cause undue stress on our current webhosts.

Quadfire & Merlin Renders

With the coding enhancements implemented in the last IR settling in, iceheart is hard at work creating low-poly versions of Spectre's models for the Quad-Fire Laser Upgrade, Merlin MMS weapon, and Merlin MMS ammo pack. Here's some renders of the there for you:

Remember, these are renders of the in-game models. Doom 3 won't light them as nicely, but every polygon you see is a polygon you'll get.

Internal Release: 2007-11-11

A new internal release is now available. For end-users, the appeal will primarily be a fixed version of ic_damp and a music volume slider in the menu for people who HATE our music even though we have the most rad-to-the-max beats this side of Frank Klepacki, yo.

Get your IR on in the forums, and stay tuned for another one next weekend, if we can manage it.

New Team Member: Verran!

I'm pleased to announce another new face in the IC family: Jon "Verran" Vukovich has signed-on to create some music tracks for us. Verran is a great techno artist who's even contributed to Core Decision, the commercial 6DOF game. His music will likely be featured in ic_mine and ic_damp in IC004, and we'll be looking in to implementing some kind of jukebox or music-rotation system to support our somewhat lopsided number of musicians.

Welcome aboard, Verran!

IR Server Up: 76.67.52.130:27666

I believe I now have a correctly-configured dedicated server running using the latest IC IR (see the post below). It should show up in your server list, or you can pull down the console and type connect 76.67.52.130:27666 to get there manually. I've opened the ports on my router and even enabled this fancy-pants system whereby it'll prioritize game traffic so hopefully the connection won't be too bad while I'm downloading my Khazakh Interracial Donkey-on-Goat videoskopemachine... uh, data files.

Internal Release: 2007-09-16

"Wait a minute," you're saying, "why are you advertising an internal release on the front page?" Well, the simple answer is because our Internal Releases are not going to be so internal anymore. I decided that it really wasn't fair to cut you all out on the wacky antics and high-larious crazyness that are our IRs, so from now on, all of our Internal Releases will be public. They won't be posted on moddb, and I won't be linking to the downloads here on the front page, but you'll find them in the Internal Discussion forum, with a description of what's new. IR 2007-09-16, as with our previous internal releases, consists of a couple of add-on PK4 files that you simply slap into your IC003a intoceberon/ folder. Check out the forum thread for the download link as well as a list of changes, and what's more, as soon as I can figure out the correct setup I'll be running a dedicated server today using that IR which should hopefully not suck too much.

Before you go and get all giddy, though, bear in mind two important caveats to our Internal Releases:

Our IRs are only for Windows, not Linux or Mac

Our IRs may have game-crashing bugs. More than usual, at any rate
For example, this IR has a bug that causes the Pyro GX to not cast any shadow, like some kind of undead ship.

Don't forget -- to use this IR, you need to have IC 003a and your copy of Doom 3 has to be patched up to 1.3.1 (which it has to be to play regular IC 003a anyways). See my post below if you're having trouble finding 1.3.1; there are now mirrors of the Doom 3 patches in our downloads area.

Updated Pyro GX

The culmination of his very life's work, iceheart has been toiling away for ages and ages on re-doing the low-poly version of Spectre's original high-poly Pyro GX model, and now it's (almost) done. Featuring an improved normal map and skin and weighing in at 1600 triangles less than the old one, iceheart's new downsample will be included henceforth in all internal releases and, of course, in the forthcoming IC004. Take a gander at these before-and-after pics as well as a nice shot of the new model.

Doom 3 patch 1.3.1 mirrors

Since the #1 issue regarding IC 003a seems to be not having the Doom 3 1.3.1 patch, and since I've noticed that, rather pathetically, the 1.3.1 installers are somewhat hard to find, I've taken the liberty of mirroring them on moddb. Now there are no more excuses for not having a fully-patched version of Doom 3!

Doom 3 1.3.1 Windows installer
Doom 3 1.3.1 Linux installer
Doom 3 1.3.1 Mac installer
Into Cerberon 003A Released!

Announcing the release of Into Cerberon version 003a, codenamed "Quartzon", a minor update to our previous 003 release. IC003a brings the following enhancements:

Updated codebase to Doom 3 patch 1.3.1. Now users of all four Doom 3 supported OS/architectures can play together: Windows x86, Linux x86, Mac x86, and Mac PowerPC!

New version of ic_mine fixes many sizing issues

Autocannon weapon pickup correctly gives 24 Autocannon ammo, instead of 24 minigun ammo

Corrected a couple of textures
IC 003a In the Pipeline

Just a heads-up that a "quick-fix" IC 003a release is in the pipeline to release in the very near future. This re-release of IC 003 will be recompiled for the recently-released Doom 3 1.3.1 patch and should, I believe, allow Intel-Mac players to join in the fun.

If I can figure out the problem in time, I also hope to have the dreaded Radeon X1300-series graphics bug corrected. If you have a Radeon X1300-series card or other ATI graphics card and have experienced graphical corruption issues when playing Into Cerberon 003, please let me know if you can help test by e-mailing me at hexetic@hotmail.com; I'd like to get some condumps from affected users and also test out some alternative PAKs -- it's probably a texture problem, but it's hard to be sure, and more testers always helps.

Anyways, keep your eyes peeled for a Doom 3 1.3.1-friendly, Macinteltosh-enabled, hopefully Radeon-able IC 003 re-release coming soon.

A word about Doom 3 1.3.1

A note that a new Doom 3 patch (1.3.1) was released last week, primarily adding Vista support. It's important to note that Into Cerberon 0.0.3 was released a couple of months ago and as such will NOT work with the new patch. You need to install Doom 3 patch 1.3 - not 1.3.1 - if you want to play IC.

The next IC release will be compiled for Doom 3 1.3.1, of course, but unless there's a surging demand for IC Vista support right now, that will probably be at least a few months away.

Hostage, Post-Robot

Team member and mannequin-maker LDAsh put up a new shot this weekend of what he's been working on; if you've been following IC for a while you'll remember the superb hostage model he's throwing together for us. Well, we're not quite ready to implement our "Rescue the Hostage" CTF mode yet, and we're not even close to starting on a singleplayer side, but there is one use for a hostage model in a multiplayer map that requires virtually no scripting...

Yes, in IC 004 mappers will have access to this charming piece of... er, human debris, to be sprinkled liberally around the map wherever the mapper desires. There's also the considerably less gory PTMC logo decal to work with, but a splash of Doom 3's excellent blood-splat decals'll make that fit in just fine.

Final IC 003 Release Candidate Ready

In case you didn't notice the thread in the internal discussion forum, we'll be conducting our final play-test tomorrow of IC 003, with the aim to release Saturday night if all is well. The final release candidate package is being uploaded to our internal file-server and all team members should obtain it in preparation for the test at 1700h UTC (1200h EST).

Team-members, please also take a quick look at the IC 003 Readme and verify its contents (like your name, for example).

IC 003: Source Code Finalized

A little heads-up that the source code for IC 003 has been finalized, and sent to our cross-platforms builders. All of you waiting anxiously with baited breath for IC 003, take heart and take a peek at our IC 003 objectives thread. Internally, we're up to Release Candidate 2 today, which brings in fancy-pantsy new HDR bloom from Marko Haka; it looks a lot spiffier than the bloom we used in IC 002.

We're definitely going to hit November, probably before American thanksgiving.

Guest Posting Disabled

I'd already disabled guest posting for every forum except General Discussion, but it appears that we CANNOT SHTOP ZE SPAMBOTS so I'm turning off guest-posting there as well. If you want to post in the forums, you will now need to register. Of course, you can still read as much as you like without logging in.

New Official Team Member: vertigo-one

Give a warm welcome to vertigo-one, who's now received an "official comission" on the IC team for his work in re-creating the (beloved? hated?) Minerva for IC 003. I'll admit I had some doubts about whether he'd be able to pull it off, as by his own admission he's a novice with the Doom 3 tools, but you gotta hand it to him for not throwing in the towel and for taking his lumps like a man. The version of Minerva that'll ship with IC 003 will be (I think) his third complete rebuild of the map after we trashed the first two... so yeah, it should be ready to rock.

Though as a Descent map it isn't a heck of a lot to look at compared to what the Doom 3 engine can do, here are some WIP screenshots from last week's internal-test version to whet your appetite.

Hopefully you old-skoolers will have some fun bouncing around in there.

Not to detract from vertigo-one's valiant efforts, but Jaspos' Tumbler map (another new one for IC 003) is ready to rock with a simply beautiful outdoor area that should be a blast to zip around in.

We're holding on a finished AutoCannon pickup and some final updates to Minerva before IC 003 goes live, so don't worry - it's a-comin'!

And, in completely random irony news, as I type the last few words of this newspost, what song has iTunes chosen to "randomly" play but the namesake of this very mod - Sonic Mayhem's Quake II track, "Descent Into Cerberon". Oh, to blast Stroggs from a Pyro...

Hosting Provider Switched

If you are reading this, then your local domain servers have been updated to reflect the new host for chmodoplusr.com. As a result of a prolonged PHP-related outage on our old host, as well as an annoying lack of support, I've switched hosting providers. Hopefully, this new host will be more stable than the last and we can avoid significant downtime.

Much work on IC 003 has been completed, and I'm going to push for a release in the next two weeks, dropping features if necessary, because it's starting to get a little stale. If you haven't already, check out the pictures of Jaspos' sweet-looking ic_tumbler in the forums and on moddb.
